Prospering Boards governance support in Wales
Whether its reviewing basic good practice or dealing with complex challenges, AIM’s Prospering Boards governance support programme offers the opportunity to work with one of our experienced and expert consultants.

You can apply for two days of online support focused on the following areas:
- Planning for the future – skills auditing and succession planning
Get help identifying skills strengths and gaps, reviewing current recruitment and succession practices and developing a recruitment and succession plan for bringing in new trustees and managing succession longer term.
- Recruiting new Trustees or recruiting a Chair of Trustees
We can help by advising on and supporting the development of role descriptions and person specification, recruitment pack, advert and sources, criteria for selection and interviewing
- Sharing the load – trustee roles and responsibilities
Introducing trustee roles and responsibilities, reviewing individual roles and drawing up role descriptions.
- Sharing the load – effective delegation
Developing a consistent delegation framework to sub-committees and museum staff and accountable reporting structures.
- Health check – is your governing document up to date?
Support to review whether your governing document fit for purpose for your current organisation.
- Supporting the Chair
Coaching and individual support for a Chair of Trustees
We can also provide more bespoke consultancies so if your Board of Trustees would like help in any other way then please get in touch.
The programme is open to AIM member museums in Wales. Applicant museums will usually either be Accredited or working towards Accreditation. We are also able to offer support to non-Accredited museums where they can demonstrate that the support will enable them to move forward to apply for Accreditation. We give priority to museums that are not NPOs.
Thanks to funding from the Welsh government, we’re able to give three AIM members in Wales two days of consultancy support each. Funding will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
How does it work?
Museums considering an application should contact Margaret Harrison for a preliminary discussion: email@example.com.
If we can support your request, we will put you in touch with one of our consultants for an initial exploratory discussion after which we’ll ask you to fill in a short application form. In addition to basic details about your museum we will ask you:
- What is the main areas of focus for developing your Board?
- What is the main outcome you would like to achieve?
- The agreed scope of work with the consultant and timetable for this
- How will you ensure that all Trustees are engaged with this process?
We will expect all applications to be supported by the Chair of Trustees and that they will participate in the consultancy.
Applications are open now and funding will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Three AIM members in Wales will receive two days of consultancy support each.
Applications will be assessed by AIM staff and referred to the AIM Board if appropriate.
Successful applicants will be required to confirm that they accept our Terms and Conditions.
