Amberley Museum is the only centre of its kind in the South East of England, preserving, displaying and documenting traditional industry and rural activity. It welcomes a wide range of visitors of all ages, including families looking for a fun day out, and industrial enthusiasts.
We are looking for Trustees with a passion for heritage and the ability to think strategically, assess opportunities and manage risk, work with staff and volunteers, and who can bring their knowledge and expertise from any of the public, private, or voluntary sectors. We would particularly welcome applications from people with knowledge of the following areas:
- Education and Learning;
- Engineering;
- HR:
- Legal;
- Building Surveying, Property and Planning,
- Social Media and Event Management.
Trustees need to be able to make adequate time available for this role as it is sometimes ‘hands-on’.
Our Trustees don’t just attend a meeting every six weeks – they visit the Museum and get involved, and there are Board Committees to work through the detail of some of our challenges and ambitions. As a result, we would like to hear from individuals with a wide range of experience and perspectives and encourage applications from a broad spectrum of people.
The role includes specific accountability, legal and financial duties, as well as setting policy and strategic planning, and acting as an enthusiastic and well-informed advocate for the Museum.
Person Specification
We are ideally looking for people who can meet the following:
- Passionate about and committed to the objectives of the Museum with proven interest of knowledge in an area of heritage or the Museum’s activities;
- Understands the duties of a Trustee and the governance of a charity;
- Local to Sussex and able to devote the necessary time to the Museum to fulfil this role, including on site presence;
- Able to demonstrate good judgment, tact, diplomacy and discretion;
- Able to think strategically and have strategic vision;
- Understands the voluntary sector/charities/third sector;
- Has good networking and communication skills;
- Can work as part of a team and support Board decisions.
Additional information
Number of meetings per annum/time commitment:
- Board of Trustee meetings are normally held every six weeks, more often if required, and committee meetings are held at least quarterly unless otherwise determined;
- Trustees are expected to be involved in at least one Board Committee;
- Trustees are expected to visit the site from time to time and interact with staff, visitors and volunteers.
