Trustees play an essential role in the leadership of the Museum, and we value greatly the experience, objectivity, expertise, personal perspectives and commitment our Trustees bring, without remuneration and purely in the interests of the Museum.

We expect Trustees to demonstrate many of the following qualities and attributes:

• An ability to think strategically, focussing on major issues.
• Experience of business management in either private, public or third sectors.
• Well established and current professional networks.
• Effective communications and advocacy skills.
• A readiness and ability to play a role in fundraising.
• Empathy with the Museum’s vision, including an appreciation for the social and
• industrial history of the region in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
• Respect amongst regional stakeholders and national decision-makers.

We are particularly keen to hear from people with strong business experience and those at the early stages of their careers, and from people who can add to the diversity, lived experience and perspectives of the Board.

Additional information

Number of meetings per annum/time commitment: The estimated time commitment is the equivalent of two days a quarter, which takes into account 6 Board meetings per year, as well as travel time, reading reports and other information, respond to emails, and attendance at occasional events.

Daytime or evening meetings: Daytime. Board meetings are held at 3pm on the final Thursday in: (1) February, (2) April, (3) June, (4) August, (5) October and (6) December.
