Keswick Museum is located in the Lake District, a World Heritage Site inscribed by UNESCO as a cultural landscape. It has operated from its Arts & Crafts building since 1897. The museum became a charity in 2014, and Keswick Museum & Art Gallery Management Ltd now runs the museum and manages its collection on behalf of Allerdale Borough Council. Its mission is ‘To provide facilities to advance the education of the public in the arts and crafts and the natural and cultural history of Keswick and the surrounding region’.

Keswick Museum attracts around 20,000 visitors per year and cares for over 20,000 objects in its collection – items related to natural and social history, archaeology, geology, arts, and literature. Through its work, it aims to make history and culture accessible to all, thereby reducing barriers to participation by individuals and communities. The museum is well known for its popular exhibitions and activities, making it an active hub for the local community and for the diverse audience of tourists who visit Keswick. It delivers highly successful programmes of creative learning and education for young people and adults, developed in response to the interests of local communities throughout the area.

This post is part of the project Opening the Store Door, funded by the Arts Council and National Lottery. The postholder will conduct a collections inventory to the Spectrum standard, use the Modes CMS to document collections, photograph the museum’s Keswick School of Industrial Arts collection, and support museum volunteers to assist with the project.
