Salary: £28,500
Hours: Full time
Term: Permanent
Location: National Maritime Museum Cornwall, Discovery Quay, Falmouth, TR11 3QY
Closing date: 9:00 am 5 February 2024

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall is an independent, modern, multi award-winning Museum, beautifully showcasing the historical, current, and future role of the sea in shaping Cornish, national and international culture. We are proud of our past but forward looking.

We are seeking a Boat Collection Manager who will be responsible for the care, conservation, repair, and restoration of approximately 160 boats, known as the National Small Boat Collection (NSBC), and the maintenance of a smaller number of wet boats which can be used on the water.

You will research and provide advice for the Acquisitions Committee regarding acquiring new boats which will enhance and strengthen the NSBC.

The Boat Collection Manager will manage our off-site store and workshop facility and will programme regular activities in the Museum workshop which will enrich the visitor experience.

The postholder will be line manager to the Assistant Boat Collection Manager and a team of boat collection volunteers, which will include leading boat building projects. You will therefore have a general knowledge of health and safety procedures as they relate to a workshop environment. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

You will be responsible for the National Small Boat Register (NSBR), a database containing information on small craft under 33 ft, ensuring it is regularly updated and accessible to the public.

It is therefore essential that you have an enthusiasm and passion for historic boats and maritime heritage, with practical experience of working with, building, repairing, and restoring traditional small boats, especially wooden vessels.

It would be desirable if you have experience of handling and moving boats, practical knowledge of boat engines, with sailing experience.
