Boat Curator – National Maritime Museum Cornwall

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall is an independent, modern, multi award-winning Museum, beautifully showcasing the historical, current, and future role of the sea in shaping Cornish, national and international culture. We are proud of our past but forward looking.

We are seeking a Boat Curator, who will be responsible for the care, conservation, and documentation of the National Small Boat Collection (NSBC), along with the wet and dry boats acquired separately by the Museum, and those on loan from other institutions. You will research and provide advice about acquiring new boats which will enhance and strengthen the NSBC.

You will champion the National Small Boat Register (NSBR), a database containing information on small craft under 33 ft, ensuring it is regularly updated and accessible to the public.

Our aim is to promote our collection for engagement and learning, so you will help to plan and deliver an annual activities programme for our Museum workshop, which will enrich our visitors’ experience.

It is therefore essential you have previous experience of curatorial processes, procedures and current museum standards, along with an enthusiasm and passion for historic boats and maritime history.

You will have excellent communication, research and IT skills which will include experience of using collection management systems and databases.

It would be desirable if you have a knowledge of boats and associated materials, which includes sailing experience. Also desirable is a relevant first degree, Museums Association qualification, and/or Museum Studies qualification.
