The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) is seeking an experienced Building and Conservation Manager who will lead our heritage management programme and oversee the general maintenance works in the UK and on-site in Antarctica.

  • Freelance contract
  • Fee: £34,000 over 12 months, payable in instalments.
  • Based on ca.3 days per week in UK and full time when in Antarctica (up to 12 weeks)
  • Home working until post COVID, then we will operate a hybrid working model – a flexible blend of home-working with some office-based work at the office in Cambridge.

About the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust

UKAHT is a UK-based charity that is responsible for the care of six former British scientific stations and designated Historic Sites and Monuments on the Antarctic Peninsula, dating from 1944 to the early 1990s. Our sites represent the birthplace of British science in Antarctica – with our flagship site being Port Lockroy – a working seasonal museum with a unique collection of artefacts, an inquisitive gentoo penguin colony and the world’s most southerly public Post Office.

About the role

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced Building and Conservation Manager to join us as we develop long-term conservation management and implementation plans for the historic sites we manage. This role will manage both the heritage and buildings management programme and work with our Antarctic Operations team to deliver the seasonal fieldwork on-site in Antarctica to the highest international heritage and building standards.

Working alongside the wider UKAHT team and a range of partners and heritage professionals, you will drive forward our vision and goals and help us secure the physical heritage on the Peninsula to ensure the sites, artefacts, stories and historic environment will be preserved for future generations.

You will be responsible for six Historic Sites’ heritage management located on the Antarctic Peninsula, predominantly heritage buildings 1944 -75 as well as some modern structures. This role encompasses building and facilities management for all buildings on each site, to ensure sites are managed holistically.
