Chief Executive – National Motor Museum
Salary: £75,000
Term: Full-time
Closing date: 12:00 am 20 July 2021
The award-winning National Motor Museum is the UK’s first major museum dedicated to motoring and opened to acclaim in 1972 with the 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu as a founding Trustee & Chair. The Museum is overseen by the National Motor Museum Trust (NMMT) whose mission is to engage and inspire people with the story of motoring through world-class collections. The Trust is committed to promoting education, research and conservation in motoring history for the benefit of everyone. For over five decades the NMM has been a leader and key influencer in the transformation of the independent museums, country house, visitor attraction and historic car sectors. The Museum sits in the wider matrixed structure of Beaulieu Enterprises, which is a key stakeholder and partner.
As a nationally styled museum under the Arts Council England’s (ACE) Accreditation scheme, the NMM has a national remit and an international reputation. The Museum’s collections are designated by ACE as being of national and international significance, from world famous vehicles to a huge variety of motoring objects in the Collections Centre which are a key resource for projects, research, exhibitions, and education programmes. In total, the Museum collections include approximately 180 cars and small commercial vehicles, 100 motorcycles, 50,000 motoring related objects, over 1.4 million photographic images and 24 cubic metres of motoring archive. The specialist Reference Library has over 310,000 individual items and the Film & Video Library holds 26,000 moving image and audio items.
The Board of Trustees is now seeking exceptional candidates to lead the Museum in the role of Chief Executive. This is a rare opportunity to play a central role in taking the Museum forward, with plans to raise its profile and visitor numbers significantly and to ensure its long-term sustainability. Candidates will ideally bring strategic leadership experience gained in a similar context and will have a good understanding of the issues facing museums and cultural organisations. The post-holder will require a strong interest in automobiles and mobility – both historical and future facing- and will be a compelling advocate and communicator.
