This really is an exciting time to take on the role of Curator at River and Rowing Museum.
In the next eighteen months we’ll have the best knowledge of our whole collection to date, and urgent work to stabilise the environmental conditions in the galleries will have been completed. The galleries will shift from being predominantly unchanging to having roughly 40% permanent displays, 40% changing displays and 20% active zones for person-led experiences.
The Curator will also be responsible for the ‘outdoor gallery’ including an RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden known as Ratty’s Refuge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead on salvage activity, liaising with the Head of Facilities and Commercial
- Monitor environmental conditions in all collections display and storage areas, and organise remedial action if undesirable conditions or pests are detected
- Ensure the collection is stored and displayed to the highest standards to ensure its ongoing integrity
- Support volunteers and contractors in delivery of the indoor and outdoor gallery conservation maintenance plans
- With the Head of Public Engagement and Community, Learning and Volunteering Manager to develop an ongoing plan for temporary displays in the galleries
- Select items from the collection to share stories within temporary displays and exhibitions, and undertake / commission research to ensure authenticity
- Apply a high level of design and creativity to temporary displays, incorporating a variety of feedback into their ongoing development and improvement
- Facilitate the involvement of artists and craftspeople in using the museum collection and stories as a source of inspiration and expression
- Provide training to volunteer gallery animators to use objects and stories to provide informal engagement to both visitors and formal learning groups
- Work closely with the Collections Registrar to maintain documentation, policies and procedures to meet Arts Council Accreditation standards
- Prepare and manage the curatorial budget, seeking opportunities for external funding where possible
- Work with colleagues across the organisation to develop high quality and successful interpretation, learning and engagement programmes.
