Curator – The Royal Logistic Corps Museum

Job Title: Curator
Salary: £26,350
Hours: 37 hours a week, with occasional evening or weekend work
Term: Permanent with a 6 month probationary period
Location: Royal Logistic Corps Museum, Worthy Down, Winchester

This position would suit an experienced museum professional with a passion for collections management and an interest or understanding of military history.

Job Purpose

To be responsible for the management of all the museum objects, including uniforms, medals, weapons, vehicles and fine art.

To adhere to the RLC Museum curatorial and collection policies / plans / objectives as directed by the Museum Director and Board of Trustees.

To ensure that the necessary curatorial processes are in place to maintain ACE Accredited Status for the Museum, in terms of collection management.

To be responsible for the development of the collection in accordance with the museum’s Collections Development Plan.

To be responsible for the running of the objects store and all associated activities and staff who work within.

To assist and sometimes lead on the planning and delivery of future or temporary exhibitions.

To conduct research where required, to better label, describe or understand the objects within the museum or to answer enquiries about those objects when required.

Key areas of responsibility

To ensure the proper care and documentation of the collection both in terms of conservation and security, considering Accreditation and SPECTRUM standards.

To ensure that acquisitions, loans and disposals are done in accordance with the RLC Museum Collections policies and to agreed SPECTRUM standards.

To support the Museum Director to achieve objectives set out in the Museum Forward Plan, which may require, on agreement, taking on additional museum wide responsibilities as necessary.

To be responsible for the management of any staff and volunteers involved with curatorial work; to ensure that all volunteers are recruited, trained and are provided with development opportunities.

In collaboration with other Museum staff, to ensure the protection and security of the Museum buildings, including health and safety and risk assessments; to promptly report any maintenance issues to relevant personnel. 

Minimum Requirements (Essential)

Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject or with at least 5 years’ experience within a museum setting.

A sound understanding or a genuine interest in military history.

Familiarity with managing collections and museum curatorial processes.

Ability to work independently and to meet deadlines.

Accuracy and attention to detail.

Willingness to undertake further training as required.

IT literate with experience of using databases.

Additional Requirements (Desirable)

A professional Museum qualification at a Master’s degree level or equivalent.

At least 3 years previous experience, gained within a “military museum”.

Additional Information

The post occasionally involves physical handling and lifting of museum objects.
