Curator – Shakespeare Birthplace Trust
Salary: £25,644
Hours: Full time
Term: Permanent
Location: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, The Shakespeare Centre, Henley Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire CV37 6QW
Closing date: 12:00 am 8 October 2023
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is looking to recruit a Curator at an exciting time for our work with our collections. We are embarking on a reimagining of our museum purpose, part of which includes reinterpreting our collections for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to Stratford-upon-Avon each year, and the millions more who engage with us online. We are also about to embark on a storage upgrade project, looking to provide better conditions for our Designated collections.
The Curator will lead on the development, cataloguing and care of our museum collections, to make them accessible to our audiences.
Working with curatorial colleagues in our collections team, you will be the lead for interpretation activities, across our museum, library and archive collections, including our work reinterpreting historically problematic material. You will contribute to our current multi-year programming theme The Women who made Shakespeare.
You will be a vital part of our interdisciplinary team of museum, library and archive specialists. You will lead on museum practice and provide expertise on shared curatorial activity. You will be committed to working collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to increase public access to, and engagement with, our museum collection.
Reporting to the Collections Manager, and working closely with museum, library and archive colleagues, you will lead the development of our museum collections, in line with our policy, provide curatorial expertise, and deliver access to collections, including programmes of digital content, administering loans and managing collections care activity across the Shakespeare family homes and collections stores.
To be successful in this role you will be a qualified museum professional and have experience in collections management and delivering museum interpretation. A proven interest in Shakespeare or Early Modern England would be an advantage.
This is an exciting time to join the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in terms of our programming and site development plans. You will be able to plan and deliver to deadlines, have strong accuracy and attention to detail, good communication skills, and experience supervising staff and volunteers. You will be a team player whilst also being resourceful and able to work on your own initiative.
