Hours: 35 hours per week, with reasonable additional hours on occasion

This is a unique opportunity for an inspired heritage professional to make their mark with the exciting development of a new museum in the green heart of Somerset.

The Alfred Gillett Trust are the custodians of the internationally significant collections of global shoe company C&J Clark Ltd and the Clark family which encompass 20,000 shoes, shoe machines, stunning advertising artwork, family and company documents dense with history, not to mention ichthyosaur fossils and a prototype 1840s computer. Based in a Grade II listed Georgian mansion in Street, Somerset, the collections are stored in a purpose-built archive store.

Having successfully purchased our collections and secured funding for a new museum on our site, we are looking for the right creative, energetic leader to realise the Trustees’ vision of transforming the Alfred Gillett Trust into a new public heritage experience through the Street House Masterplan, including a new museum on the site by 2025, Clark’s 200th anniversary.

The Role

Reporting to the Trust Board, this is an exciting opportunity for a new Director to lead the Trust through this development and successfully deliver the Street House Masterplan alongside our existing heritage and collections work.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be experienced in management within the heritage/museum sectors
  • Be able to lead with confidence
  • Have experience of dealing with people at all levels
  • Have a proven strategic capability and experience of successful business planning
  • Have financial and commercial acumen and effective experience in fundraising

A relevant professional qualification would be advantageous.
