The Historic Dockyard Chatham, the best preserved of all Georgian dockyards, is the world’s most complete dockyard of the Age of Sail; a time when the Royal Navy dominated the oceans, establishing Great Britain as a global power.  Upon the closure of the dockyard in 1984, The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust was established as the custodian of the historic estate, to preserve and educate on the historic and architectural significance of The Historic Dockyard Chatham.

Today, The Historic Dockyard Chatham, is the leading example of a mixed-use heritage estate.  A vitally significant historic estate delivering outstanding preservation, an award-winning independent museum, commercial estate, Higher Education campus, leading film location. and residential community.

The role

Preserving, managing, presenting, and developing the estate are at the heart of what this role is all about. As our Director of Estates and Preservation you will play a critical role in meeting our Preservation charitable objective, promoting excellence in the care, conservation and stewardship of this world-class heritage site.

You will provide strategic leadership for our preservation programme, ensuring excellence in the maintenance, presentation and management of the buildings and estate.  You will be instrumental in the delivery of our strategy of ‘Preservation Through Re-use’, including major development projects and unlocking under-utilised assets to bring them into meaningful use.

As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will also play an important role in shaping our overall organisational development, representing the Trust at the highest level with key stakeholders and partners on matters of heritage and preservation.

We are open to what sector you may come from but, whatever your background, you will be an expert in the care and preservation of historic buildings, a creative thinker who is able to inspire and drive change as we deliver our ambitions.
