Delivering museum education is about more than teaching visitors about museum collections and individual exhibits. It extends to the museum buildings, the river on our doorstep, and the fascinating history of our local area.

We require a dynamic Education Development Manager with the ability to devise, develop and work with a small team to support the delivery of a varied, exciting and informative programme of museum centred education to children, typically visiting from schools and colleges, and to adults, usually from the local community.

We are looking for a leader to take the education programme onto the next phase of its development, using solid people skills, developing imaginative and innovative programmes tailored to the national curriculum. We also want attract a broad range of visitors including our more mature audience with varied and interesting sessions, for individuals and groups.

We need you to help us to bring our unique setting and collections to life in a programme that combines academic relevance, inspires learning and creativity for both schools and the broader community, and future proof our education programme through a diverse variety of formats.

Key Responsibilities

Development

  • To research, develop and manage the delivery of fully costed, outstanding, creative and dynamic education sessions, projects, resources and learning materials, physical and digital, with a new programme to commence Summer 2023.
  • To clearly identify the target audience
  • To develop museum education team targets, including KPIs, income generation, teacher & student satisfaction.

Delivery and evaluation

  • To give professional direction in museum teaching and learning to staff, volunteers, etc in the development of sessions and resources, the day-to-day delivery of the programme, including training, supervision and evaluation;
  • To monitor and ensure safe and secure working practices in all activities, with the safety of learners, staff and volunteers and the security of handling collections, equipment and other assets recognized as priorities;
  • To work closely with the Marketing Manager to ensure excellent communication and co-ordination between the formal and informal learning programmes, and effective joint events and projects where applicable;
  • To produce a quarterly report for the Director and Trustees.
  • To manage and profile budgets, ensuring efficiency and good value;
  • To set high standards in meeting the needs of learners from schools, colleges, etc and in informal contexts

Relationships

  • To establish effective communications and relationships with relevant stakeholders
  • To develop and establish relationships with external stakeholders; other educational organisations, museums, community groups and institutions, e.g., NHLF to support and raise the profile of the museum
  • To work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the education offer is of the highest standard, and remains relevant against the curriculum for schools and the wider community, and seeks to incorporate innovations in education and technology.
  • To research and make application for external funding , and report to current funders as necessary
  • To cultivate internal relationships that cross departmental boundaries (e.g., Curators, Front of House, Marketing & Communications) and to demonstrate willingness to collaborate with project team members, as required

Safeguarding

  • To ensure compliance with Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Data Protection, Equality, Intellectual Property and other relevant legislation
  • To take responsibility for Safeguarding as the museum’s Designated Safeguarding Officer
  • To monitor and update Education related policies and procedures, ensuring that statutory responsibilities, government guidance and good practice are reflected.
  • Ensure relevant and regular staff Safeguarding training is undertaken, either led by the DSO or suitable external organisation, maintaining records of attendance.
  • Creating and arranging suitable training for Deputy Safeguarding Officer
  • Work to RMM policies and procedures, including risk management and risk assessments, to protect people, the collection and the museum’s reputation

Person Specification

Essential selection criteria (evidenced via A – Application, I – Interview, P – Presentation)

  • Enthusiasm, passion, curiosity and an interest in the museum sector. (A,I)
  • Experience of working in a project development role, creating and delivering workshops; education and/or museum experience would be beneficial (A,I, P)
  • Knowledge of the National Curriculum and an understanding of inclusion. (A,I)
  • An understanding of SEN and inclusion. The ability to adapt education workshops or activities to meet the needs of children and adults from differing schools, education settings or community groups (A,I)
  • Creative thinking. (A,I, P)
  • Competent in use of technology (A)
  • Good organisation, problem-solving and administration skills (A,I)
  • Experience of leading a team of staff and volunteers. (A)
  • Demonstrable experience of teamworking , collaborative working, and the ability to provide support to other members of the team. (A,I)
  • Excellent listening and presentation skills (I , P)
  • Effective communicator, ability to articulate and promote the education programme, and represent the museum with a range of stakeholders (I, P)
  • Skilled in developing evaluation tools proportionate to activities and sharing learning. (A,I, P)

Job details

This is a permanent full-time role with a salary of up to £45,000 dependent on experience.

Hours are flexible and may include occasional evenings or weekends.

There are 20 days holiday (pro rata) rising to 25 days (pro rata) after two years. We operate an auto-enrolment pension scheme.
