Location: The Brooking, Andover Road, Whitchurch, Hampshire RG28 7RL
Closing date: 12:00 am 10 June 2024

Days required: Anticipated minimum of 100 days and maximum of 154 days per annum between June 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and the anticipated conclusion of The Brooking’s Villum Foundation-funded project, 19 March 2026.

Background:

The Brooking CIO (https://thebrooking.org.uk) was established in 2014 upon the donation of a vast collection of historic architectural objects by our founding collector, Charles Brooking. The collections now comprise several hundred thousand items – doors, windows, stairs, rainwater goods, and much else – covering five centuries of design and making in Britain.

The collections were housed at the University of Greenwich for 25 years. In 2012, they were moved to precarious temporary storage, but thanks to a grant of £2.5m from the Villum Foundation in 2021, The Brooking was able to acquire its first permanent home, a warehouse in Whitchurch, Hampshire, and the charity launched a five-year project to relocate and organize the collections.

At present nearly two years remain for accomplishing the aims of the project. Around 75% of the collections are in Whitchurch, with the rest in storage in Cranleigh (Surrey). We are well advanced in a programme to document the artefacts, develop our collaborations, involve volunteers, and engage specialists and the wider public. Since the expansion of the Board of Trustees to eleven members at the end of 2023, The Brooking has the capacity to develop its strategy and fundraising as an aspiring museum beyond the conclusion of the current project.

With the departure of our current consultant Project Director, Paul Bonnici-Waddingham, at the end of June 2024, the Trustees have reassessed the work that need to be accomplished during the remainder of the funded development project. We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated and enthusiastic freelance Operations and Facilities Manager to take responsibility for these tasks.
