Head of Commercial Development – Museum of the Home

This role is for an experienced and dynamic commercial leader with a good understanding of operating successful commercial activity within a museum, charity or heritage environment.
About the role
Reporting directly to the Director: Operations and Finance, this role will lead a culture change within the Museum to generate additional earned income and ensure the future sustainability of the organisation.
You’ll be responsible for developing and implementing the Museum’s commercial strategy, developing and improving the museum’s existing commercial activity (hire/retail) and driving a change programme to generate additional income from a variety of sources including public programming.

Main responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the retail operation , reviewing the delivery and provision to ensure maximum return. Moving the retail area to surplus within the first 12 months. Developing future retail opportunities and driving the retail strategy.
- Lead and manage the venue hire operation , developing new opportunities utilising underused spaces or based on new models or markets. Continue the success of this area and increase income in future years.
- Develop and deliver a series of income generating ‘lates’ style events which utilise the Museum’s unique buildings and gardens and are relevant to its mission and vision.
- Develop and launch an income generating leisure learning programme which utilises the buildings, objects and expertise of the museum and its staff.
- Review options to deliver a range of public-programme style activity which is, and is intended to be income generating.
- Reporting to the Trustee board and the Board of Directors of Museum of the Home Enterprises Ltd on performance against strategy, plans and targets.
- Ensuring that all decisions are data-led and that systems are in place to collect and interpret data in order to maximise income and impact.
- Develop mutually successful relationships with suppliers and partners
- Ensure that all commercial areas and activities are operated in a safe way, and that policies and procedures are in place and adhered to.

Skills/Knowledge/Personal Attributes:
Essential:
- Proven track record in commercial management in a museum/heritage/visitor attraction/charity setting
- Proven track record of driving income through innovation
- Experience of being an effective line manager of a commercial team
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to communicate well and develop professional relationships with staff and stakeholders at all levels
- Experience developing and delivering strategies
Desirable:
- Good experience of commercial finance working with profit and loss statements, budgeting, forecasting and cost-benefit analysis
- Experience managing a retail outlet
- Experience managing a venue-hire operation

All back of house roles on minimum 4 days per week will work approximately one shift per month in the galleries as part of our Visitor First scheme.
This role will require evening and weekend working to support commercial activity.
