Created in March 2017, The Royal Parks is a charity that supports and manages 5,000 acres of historic and precious parkland across London. We look after eight of London’s largest open spaces; Hyde Park, The Green, Richmond, Greenwich, St James’s, Bushy and The Regent’s Parks, and Kensington Gardens. We also manage other important open spaces in the capital including Brompton Cemetery, Victoria Tower Gardens, Canning Green and Poet’s Corner.

We are now seeking an Interpretation Manager to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis.

The Role

As the Interpretation Manager, you will be responsible for implementing our new Interpretation and Wayfinding Plan, which is focused on making our parks accessible and welcoming for everyone.

You will play a vital role in sharing the stories of our sites’ unique landscapes and rich history from in-park signage to online interactive experiences.

Creating consistent, high-quality interpretation across physical and digital media for all our sites, you will devise interpretive material for various projects, campaigns and events.

You will play a key role in delivering the interpretation scheme for our flagship project ‘Greenwich Park Revealed’, which will restore the park’s historic landscape and provide learning opportunities for future generations of visitors.

Managing a multidisciplinary team of content producers, you will support major corporate initiatives aimed at improving the visitor experience, including our new visitor research programme.

Additionally, you will:

  • Develop a style guide for written communications, such as naming conventions and tone
  • Ensure information is researched, written and designed to the highest possible standards
  • Act as the point of contact for the Communications and Engagement Directorate and operational teams

About You

To be considered as our Interpretation Manager, you will need:

  • Experience of developing and implementing interpretation schemes for organisations or attractions in the heritage, cultural, educational and/or charity sectors
  • Experience of managing or working in multi-disciplinary teams, with a proven track record of creative leadership to find innovative interpretive solutions
  • Experience of working to corporate brand guidelines and evolving design templates for interpretive material
  • An understanding of audiences and audience segmentation, with demonstrable experience of adapting content to suit different audiences
  • Knowledge of interpretive theory, interpretive media and best practice in the cultural, heritage, education or museums sector
  • An understanding of the access and diversity needs of a range of different audiences
  • A degree level qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant subject

A postgraduate degree or professional qualification in a relevant subject would be beneficial to your application, as would solid experience of producing creative physical and digital interpretation, including for outdoor and/or multi-site attractions.

Experience of producing wayfinding for outdoor and/or multi-site attractions would also be advantageous, as would experience of managing budgets and presenting realistic costings for work.
