Interpretation Officer – Historic Dockyard Chatham

It is an exciting time to be joining the Collections Department at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. 2024 marks 40 years since the working Dockyard closed and four decades since the creation of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust. In our anniversary year, we will be remembering the devastating impact the closure of the Dockyard had on Medway, celebrating the achievements of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust in preserving the former Royal Dockyard and giving everyone the opportunity to engage in our story now and in the future.

We will be opening the doors to a newly refreshed No.1 Smithery, which will include a transformed visitor welcome, improved access for all users and enhanced display of the Imperial War Museums and Royal Museums Greenwich collections.

We work with a wide range of partners to deliver exciting programmes of temporary exhibitions each year. The 2024 calendar includes headline exhibitions RNLI 200, commemorating the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s 200^th anniversary; National Historic Ships Photography Competition; and a brand new exhibition from world famous artist Ralph Steadman. 2024 also marks the 80th anniversary of the commissioning of HMS CAVALIER.

We are seeking an Interpretation Officer to delve into our vast collections and help us tell our unique story to visitors in our galleries and historic ships and to our digital audiences via our Collections Online. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing our temporary exhibition programme, working closely with the wider Collections team and Programming team as well as with designers, contractors and external partners to deliver incredible experiences for our visitors.
