Leadership Programme Consultant – AIM
Term: August 2022 - February 2023
Location: AIM
Closing date: 5:00 pm 25 July 2022
AIM is recruiting a Leadership Programme Consultant(s) to deliver the Network for Resilience in Wales and Rising Leaders programmes in 2022-2023. Both programmes are funded by the Welsh Government.
Introduction to AIM
The Association of Independent Museums is a thriving UK museum membership organisation with over 1000 museum members. We represent a wide range of the UK’s museum and heritage organisations, from some of the largest attractions in the country to small, grassroots heritage organisations across a huge range of subject areas and localities. AIM helps heritage organisations prosper. We believe that museums must grow to fulfil their purpose and demonstrate the relevance of heritage to everyone.
Network for Resilience in Wales and Rising Leaders
With funding from the Welsh Government, AIM has been helping museums in Wales since 2016. A key aspect of this funding is to support museums leaders in Wales. The needs identified at the start of the programme were:
- Support focused on museum leaders as individuals
- A safe space to share experiences with other leaders in a sector where people are often quite isolated in their day jobs, to improve personal resilience
- Specific training and development support
The outcomes of better support for leaders would be:
- Individuals who were energised and encouraged in their day jobs
- More potential for collaboration, especially informal, smart joint working
- More individuals who felt able to participate in sector wide networks and initiatives, raising the status and profile of Welsh museums, opening the door to more collaborations with the broader cultural and communities sectors
The leaders group, Network for Resilience in Wales (NRW) has been running since 2016 and is now strong and resilient network providing members with expert training and peer support. The group has 24 members from across the museum sector in Wales. Support in 2021-22 included:
- 3 day webinars on:
Strategy and long-term planning handling the new normal
Leadership, teamwork and learning organisations
Museums as businesses, entrepreneurship and financial management
- Two-day “virtual residential” on surfing chaos and managing disenchantment; how to emerge unscathed
- Two-day residential at Gregynog in mid Wales on turning challenges into opportunities, the new Curriculum for Wales
The Rising Leaders programme was launched in 2021. 15 people took part from across the museums, heritage, archives and libraries sectors in Wales. The programme in 2021-22 consisted of six online workshops on:
Leadership and motivation
Cultural institutions as businesses
Learning outside the classroom and the new curriculum for Wales
Audiences, narratives and marketing
Narratives, programmes and “the digital”
Resilience, teamwork and me
Participants in both programmes come from across the museum sector and are from a mix of independent, local authority university, military and volunteer run museums.
