Steaming Ahead Training Coordinator – Scottish Railway Preservation Society
Salary: £25,000
Hours: 21 hours per week

The Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) is a largely volunteer run organisation with around 400 volunteers.
We are currently delivering a grant-funded project, Steaming Ahead, supported by National Lottery Players through the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which has seen a new engineering facility and improved facilities and access to the site. A new engineering facility was built last year to enable the Society to deliver training for young people through a programme of traineeships and apprenticeships. Maintaining the skills set to conserve steam locomotives and keep them running is vital for the survival of the Society.
The post holder will work closely with trainees and apprentices on a daily basis ensuring they have a programme of work that supports the successful achievement of the traineeship and apprenticeship programmes. Liaison with apprenticeship and traineeship providers for programme set up and monitoring purposes will be required. The post holder will be responsible for the advertising, recruitment, supervision and monitoring of trainees and apprentices. The post holder will also develop and deliver training to volunteers of the Society. A close working relationship with steam-shed staff, other heads of department onsite, the Volunteer Co-ordinator and volunteers is essential.
The post is grant funded until November 2024.
Key responsibilities:
- Be responsible for the management of up to four apprentices.
- Develop and implement a programme of works for trainees and apprentices within the steam shed and around the site as required
- Work with the Forth Valley College to ensure that the apprentices progress through the Modern Apprenticeship programme.
- Supervise and monitor the progress of the apprentices, providing support as required to ensure successful completion.
- Work with Falkirk Council to develop the traineeships to deliver back to work opportunities
- Develop information for traineeship and apprenticeship opportunities and ensure relevant promotion.
- Support trainees and apprentices with seeking ongoing employment.
- Be familiar with the assessment process for the Modern Apprentice Scheme and conduct assessments as required.
- Manage site training requirements and arranging appropriate training courses where required
- Deliver activities for the Youth Group and work with volunteers and staff to devise relevant opportunities.
- Contribute to the ongoing maintenance work within the Engineering Shed and undertake personal training in aspects of locomotive maintenance and restoration.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of training opportunities for volunteers.

Qualifications and experience
Essential:
- Have served a recognised engineering apprenticeship or have other relevant qualifications.
- Experience in a training role.
- Worked with apprenticeship and/or traineeship programmes.
- Worked as part of a team.
- Experience working on own initiative within an agreed work programme.
- Good understanding of basic IT systems and an ability to prepare written reports, work programmes and assessments.
Desirable:
- Have an interest in heritage railways.
- Supervisory experience.
- Hold a relevant assessor qualification.
- Experience of working within a budget.
- Experience in working with younger people including those who may be disenfranchised or suffering from low confidence and self-esteem.
Occasional weekend and evening work will be required and the Training Co-ordinator will be expected to take a flexible approach to duties and work as part of a small team of staff. This post is subject to a successful Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme check.
Salary: £25,000. Pro-rata for 21 hours £15,000
Hours: 21 per week worked flexibly, by agreement, to suit the requirements of the job.
