Weymouth Museum Trust is seeking new trustees at an exciting and crucial time in its development.
Are you interested in ensuring the future of Weymouth Museum? If so and you have the skills we are seeking please consider applying to become one of our Trustees.
Weymouth Museum Trust is constituted as a registered company and charity and its trustees are responsible for the effective governance of the museum and ensuring it fulfils its mission and delivers its vision.
The Museum has about 20,000 items in its collections which include fine art, social and community history, photography, costume, ceramics, maritime history, transport and local industry.
Our current Board has 8 Trustees and two non-elected representatives from the Council along with the County Museums Advisor. We wish to inject fresh thinking and energy into the Trust and would welcome applications from people with a broad cross-section of skills and experience. Previous experience in the museum/heritage sector would be helpful but is not essential. However, we are particularly looking for creative and forward-thinking people with experience of:
• Marketing using IT skills
• Legal matters relating to buildings
The successful applicants would become directors of the not-for-profit company.
Weymouth Museum is committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications from people regardless of gender, age, marital status, disability, religion, ethnic origin, political opinion, sexual orientation, or whether or not you have dependents.
Background
Weymouth Museum Trust was formed in 2010 and its role is to manage the Weymouth Museum and a local studies collection. The Museum is currently closed as our normal ‘home’ situated within the Brewers Quay building in Hope Square is being redeveloped. Within the agreement with the developer is a clause which commits them to providing a dedicated space for a new museum in the building.
For at least two years the museum will be closed. The majority of the collection has been placed in off-site storage to protect it. We are currently bidding to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for funding to support our future development.
This is a crucial time for the Museum when much of the planning for the new museum space will take place. We intend to widen the scope of the current museum and engage in a considerable outreach programme which will encourage a much wider section of the community to be involved with the museum.
