Job Title: Treasurer

Location: Museum of Dartmoor Life

An opportunity exists for a financially aware individual to become a trustee and treasurer with the Museum of Dartmoor Life. The treasurer is a fundamental part of the board and the appointed individual should ideally have a background in finance with proven organisational skills.

The museum is also proactively pursuing an exciting National Heritage Lottery Fund bid, and the treasurer would have substantial input to the project and be a member of the project team. The appointment would suit an individual with existing skills, but also allow for an individual who wished to improve their skill base and be involved not only the day to day business of the museum, but also the exciting prospect of being involved in a substantial project. 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Annual review of financial policy
  • Annual review and implementation of the financial strategy.
  • Point of contact (POC) for banking.
  • Overseeing day to day expenditure.
  • Overseeing procurement and authorising non routine expenditure.
  • Reporting in-year forecast expenditure and proposing a budget.
  • Bookkeeping:
    • Maintaining up to date data on database (presently an Access programme) and reporting to trustees as required.
    • Payment of bills, producing invoices and overseeing rental income.
    • Producing end of year accounts.
  • Preparing the Annual Report, seeking independent audit and producing accounts for Charity Commission Return.
  • Maintaining records of Pay Roll, acting as POC for all pay matters including HMRC and NEST (Workplace Pensions). Timely payment of tax to HMRC.
  • Preparing and submitting annual bid for Okehampton Town Council grant and West Devon Borough Council rate relief.
  • Reporting to the trustees and attending meetings at least six times a year.
  • Additionally working with the manager, chair and secretary as necessary.

Additional Responsibilities: 

Provision of financial advice and input to the proposed National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) bid.

Reviewing present accounting practices and if necessary; recommending alternative front of house systems.

Ensuring appropriate accounting package is in place to accommodate proposed NLHF bid.
