Job Title: Chair / Treasurer

Chair

Acting as a figurehead for St Barbe and as an ambassador in the local community, representing the charity at internal and external events. Meeting with potential donors and taking a lead in raising funds.

Taking responsibility for the performance of the Board of Trustees and the effectiveness of the Board Committees – Finance & General Purposes, Marketing & Development, Friends & Patrons, Collections, Exhibitions, Outreach, Front of House & Volunteers, and Environmental Responsibility. This is a voluntary, unremunerated role.

Working with the Director to set the strategic direction of the charity and to put in place performance measures and any desirable course corrections.

Taking responsibility with the Director for ensuring that St Barbe has a financially viable business model and maintains proper risk management, financial controls and compliance with legal, safeguarding and accreditation requirements.

Treasurer

The role of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of St Barbe’s finances, ensuring its financial viability and that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.  The Treasurer will also chair the Finance and General purposes Committee. This is a voluntary, unremunerated role.

  • Chartered Accountant
  • Experience of and an understanding of regulations and compliance in terms of financial reporting for the charity sector, including charity VAT and the charity SORP.
  • Significant experience of setting and monitoring organisational budgets.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the financial and legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trustees.
  • Business planning skills.
  • Ability to analyse proposals and their financial consequences.

Additional information

Number of meetings per annum/time commitment: 4 Board Meetings and minimum of a further 12 Committee Meetings per year, plus several ad-hoc meetings per month. With reading and preparation, roughly equivalent to 1 day per week.
