New book on planning exhibitions by AIM trustee

New step-by-step guide to planning exhibitions ‘Displaying Organisation’ out now!

The first in the new Museum and Galleries Essentials series from Facet Publishing, Displaying Organisation by Rhiannon Goddard draws on the author’s in-depth experience of managing a wide range of exhibitions and installations to break down the process of exhibition creation into easy-to-read sections.

Coverage includes:

  • Defining and planning your project
  • Setting up a project team, assigning roles and responsibilities
  • Carrying out a formative evaluation and writing an interpretation plan
  • The foundation skills needed to be a successful project manager – budget, risk and programme management
  • Advice and approaches on how to tackle common problems to ensure success.

This is the first book with a focus on the project management process for museum exhibitions making it a must-read for new and experienced museum and exhibition professionals, as well as students studying to enter the heritage sector.

Andrew Lovett OBE, Chief Executive, Black Country Living Museum and AIM Chair, said of the book, “This book accomplishes two things supremely well. Firstly, it provides affirmation for the experienced exhibition programme practitioner, and certainty to begin for the apprentice. Secondly, and this is the harder task, it conjures up inspiration for the producer and project manager; reminding them that engaging people, notably in history, is hugely rewarding and at its core, concerned with original creative thinking… This book will up everyone’s game, with the public being the main and rightful beneficiary.”

Rhiannon Goddard has been working in museums for over 20 years. As Head of Public Engagement Projects and Business Management she has fulfilled the role of Project Director for installations including ‘Superbloom’ at the Tower of London for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Prior to working for HRP Rhiannon worked at the British Museum, with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and Somerset House. Rhiannon shares her wealth of experience with AIM members in her role as Deputy Chair of the AIM Board.
