Trustee vacancies – The Brooking

Background

The Brooking CIO was established in 2014 upon the donation of a vast collection of architectural objects by our founding collector, Charles Brooking. Thanks to a successful grant application in 2021, the charity is now undergoing a period of significant development. Following the acquisition of our first permanent home, in Whitchurch, Hampshire, we have completed an initial phase of relocating and organising our collections. The grant project will, over the next twelve months, oversee a programme of knowledge capture, collaboration and engagement.

As we continue to develop and implement our long-term objective to become a sustainable and independent museum, we are looking to strengthen and diversify our governance through the recruitment of a new trustees. We have multiple opportunities available and welcome applications from those who have an interest in, or have experience of, one or more of the following areas; museums and heritage, arts, education, volunteering, outreach and fundraising. In addition to general trustee roles we are also recruiting for a Chair of Trustees and a Finance Trustee.

Chair

The Chair will oversee and lead the board of trustees whilst working closely with the project management team in delivering the grant project and long-term strategy of the charity to become a sustainable museum. They will be responsible for coordinating trustee recruitment and developing the board in response to the ongoing development of charity activities. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills with experience in charity leadership that can support all aspects of the charity’s work. The chair will be responsible for effective governance in response to key themes and issues within the museums and heritage sector and thus will be required to demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of delivering charitable objectives within the heritage framework.

Finance trustee

The finance trustee will provide support and governance to the board, and the project management team, in delivering the grant project, developing new funding streams and advising on day to day accounting procedures. The successful candidate will have proven financial experience and will be able to demonstrate an understanding of managing charity finances. An interest in the museums and heritage sector is also beneficial.

Additional information

The Brooking is a unique organisation and we welcome applications from those with a good sense of humour who work well as part of a team. Trustees meet at least 4 times a year, with at least one meeting in person, however as this is a period of development for the charity the ability to attend adhoc meetings will be beneficial. All roles are voluntary and not remunerated, however reasonable expenses may be paid in line with the charity’s expenses policy. Applicants should be able to commit to at least one day per month for trustee activities.
