Trustee vacancy – De Morgan Foundation

The De Morgan Collection is a world-class collection of fine and decorative arts of the Victorian period by two renowned artists.  We run our own small museum at Cannon Hall in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and employ one full-time member of staff, the Director of the De Morgan Museum, supported by a small team of volunteers.

Collectively responsible for the Foundation and its Collection, the Trustee Board oversees and steers it for the benefit of current and future generations of visitors.  Directors have a real opportunity to contribute their experience and professional expertise and become fully involved with the work of a small arts charity, to help shape its future and achieve its ambitions.  Day-to day management of the Foundation is delegated to the Director of the De Morgan Museum.

We’re looking to fill some skills gaps in our Board, to help us achieve greater resilience and sustainability, and to help us grow.  For that we need more expertise from the museum sector and more funding/revenue to meet our growing aspirations.

We are looking for applications specifically from people with a professional museum and curatorial background at a senior level, and also from people who have a track record in fundraising for museums, arts, or heritage organisations in the not-for-profit sector.  Marcomms expertise is also welcome.

Number of meetings per annum/time commitment:

The Board meets formally at least five times a year, in the evening, usually but not exclusively in central London.  Meetings generally last about two hours.  There is at least one strategy day held per year, the location for which varies.  Directors are expected to prepare for and attend meetings, to undertake work outside of meetings, and to attend events to promote the Foundation, its museum and collection, and to encourage support and advocacy.  Visits to key De Morgan sites are encouraged and expected, to gain a full flavour of the work of the Foundation.

Daytime or evening meetings:

Generally evenings (some daytime meetings from time to time)

Closing date for applications:

12 December 2022
