Trustee vacancy – National Emergency Services Museum

NESM is recruiting a Learning Trustee, a voluntary position, to sit upon its board of Trustees.

About the Museum: The National Emergency Services Museum (NESM) is an independent, self-funded museum and charity dedicated to celebrating and preserving the history of the emergency services and their communities, in peace and war. We are regularly involved in local community work, wider national and international projects as well as events all over the country. We are the largest combined emergency services museum in the world. Our learning mission is to empower learning through engagement, discovery and curiosity for all ages and abilities through interactivity with our collection.

About the role: Oversee the Learning affairs of the museum to ensure they are within the National Curriculum guidelines and are following the museum’s values and policies. Oversee the learning reports that are for internal and independent examination. Oversee the production of an annual budget for learning, and work with the CEO and learning team members on how this budget is spent. Monitor the museum and regularly report the museum’s learning position at board meetings, ensuring all board members have a clear understanding of learning at the museum. Appoint and liaise with any third parties providing learning services to the museum.

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Who has a background in education and learning, whether that is through teaching, heritage or the creative arts.
  • Is passionate about learning at all ages.
  • Is committed and dedicated.

Commitment: Trustees will take an active role in the governance of the museum, attending regular board meetings (up to four per year including the AGM), reading papers, contributing to key discussions, offering guidance on new initiatives, and helping to deliver results related to their specific area of expertise. In addition to the specific responsibilities of their role, we ask that all Trustees contribute to:

  • The establishment of a clear strategic direction for the museum.
  • The development of operational and legal policies and procedures.
  • Defining goals.
  • Setting targets.
  • The evaluation of the museum’s performance and activities.
  • The oversight of risks and opportunities for the museum.
  • Practices that ensure the financial stability of the museum.
  • The effective administration of the museum – ensuring resources are used well and for their intended purpose.
  • To uphold our Code of Conduct.
