Head of Learning – Jewish Museum London

Job Title: Head of Learning
Salary: £45,000
Hours: Full time
Term: Permanent
Location: Jewish Museum London
Closing date: 11:59 pm 11 April 2024

The Jewish Museum London Learning Team has an award-winning learning offer for schools and a vibrant informal learning programme. Last financial year, the Learning Team delivered our Jewish Heritage programmes at the Museum to over 22,000 students in total, including up to 11,000 students attending in person workshops at the Museum, 8,800 in virtual broadcasts and over 2,000 students benefitting from outreach visits, travelling exhibitions and loans boxes. The Informal Learning programme provided included family events with partners around celebrating Jewish Festivals, adult learning opportunities, and outreach reminiscence and wellbeing sessions to older people in Jewish and non-Jewish care homes.

The Jewish Museum learning programmes aims to develop creativity, critical thinking and communication skills with students and young people. We challenge prejudice and stereotypes, and ensure our workshops meet curriculum requirements across a range of subject areas. The learning programmes draw on the Museum’s wide-ranging collections, with object handling as a central feature of each workshop. Jewish Museum London is a sector leader in digital learning with excellent programming in virtual classrooms, tours and broadcasts around all aspects of Judaism, as well as delivering the online learning portal used by 119,000 users each year.

Objects are used as creative springboards to engage and inspire participants with the ‘real thing’ and to create a sense of wonder and curiosity about the collection. The Museum’s learning team passionately believe that engaging students in dialogue in a safe learning environment encourages children to develop enjoyment and confidence in learning through objects. Our workshops are designed to encourage students to gain knowledge and understanding about Judaism, the Holocaust, and migration, and to build interfaith and intercultural understanding and respect.

Our new Head of Learning will be joining us at an exciting time. We have left our Camden site and are creating a new operating model together as a team to deliver our mission out in the community and consider future options for the organisation. Already our collections team have taken new temporary displays to synagogues, community centres and other museums in 4 regions around the UK and have loaned many collections objects to significant temporary exhibitions in major museums such as Museum of London and the Tate. Our learning teams have adapted current programmes for outreach and continue virtual programming to thousands of students, along with family events and reminiscence work in Jewish care homes. The significant changes happening in our organisation now are a fantastic opportunity to rethink how and why we deliver our learning programmes and to develop new audiences and directions in the future. The Head of Learning will be a key post responsible for leading this new chapter in the history of the Jewish Museum London.”
